Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan wins German Open
July 25. AP. HAMBURG, Germany
Andrey Golubev became the first Kazakhstan player to win an ATP tour title, beating third-seeded Jurgen Melzer of Austria 6-3, 7-5 in the German Open final on Sunday.
The 23-year-old Golubev overwhelmed the 15th-ranked Melzer, a French Open semifinalist, with powerful shots from the baseline to claim the clay court event.
He did not drop serve, saving five breakpoint opportunities, and broke Melzer once in each set.
The 82nd-ranked Golubev was born in Russia but became a Kazakhstan citizen in June 2008.
