SCO members, obervers start annual summit in TashkentThe Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member countries and observer states began their annual summit in the Uzbek capital of Tashkent on Friday.

The summit is being attended by heads of state from China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, the delegate from Kyrgyzstan, and leaders and delegates from SCO observer nations – Mongolia, India, Pakistan and Iran.

At the summit, the leaders and participants will exchange views on the world and regional situation, coordinate strategies for combating terrorism, separatism and extremism, and discuss how to expand inter-member economic cooperation and set up an SCO admission mechanism.

Draft documents submitted for approval in the summit include the regulations on procedure for admitting new members, which was submitted by SCO foreign ministers last month in Tashkent, and the SCO procedure rules, which was designed to further enhance efficiency and improve the internal mechanisms of the organization.

At the end of the summit, the leaders will issue a joint declaration.

Kazakhstan takes over SCO Chair

Kazakhstan has taken over the chairmanship in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization today.

Summing up the results of the SCO Summit in Tashkent Uzbekistan President Islam Karimov delegated power of the SCO chair to his Kazakh counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev.

As N. Nazarbayev noted, as SCO Chair Kazakhstan will make every effort to continue deepening of multilateral cooperation. “Special attention will be paid to activation of international contacts aimed at positioning the SCO as an authoritative subject of the world geopolitics”, the President emphasized.

The Head of the State expressed confidence that through joint efforts all the task would be realized. “I hope to see you in Astana on June 15, 2011 – the Day of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization”, N. Nazarbayev said addressing the heads of the SCO states.

SCO member states sign a package of documents

A package of documents has been signed upon the results of the SCO Summit in Tashkent.

In particular, the presidents of the SCO member states approved the Provision on admission of new members of the SCO, SCO Rules of Procedure, Report of the Secretary-General on the work of the Organization in 2009, Report of the Council of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on its work in 2009.

Besides, there was adopted a Declaration of the 10th sitting of the SCO Heads of State Council and an information message on summit results.

Within the framework of the summit the sides signed the agreements on cooperation in the field of agriculture and on combating crime.
