Member of British House of Lords backs idea on holding OSCE Summit in 2010Kazakh Senate Chairman Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev has received the member of the House of Lords of Great Britain today.

There was held an exchange of opinions on the issues of bilateral cooperation, including at the interparliamentary level; the Senate’s press service reports.

Noting importance of the memorandum on mutual understanding between “Kazakhstan-Great Britain” cooperation group and British All Party Parliamentary Group, K.Tokayev spoke for further strengthening of a dialog between supreme representative bodies of the two countries.

Touching upon Kazakhstan’s chairmanship in the OSCE, the Speaker noted importance of participation of the Kazakh parliamentary delegation in the winter session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in Vienna.

As is known, within the framework of the forum there was held a special session devoted to the situation in Afghanistan in addition to discussion of traditional issues of policy, security, democracy, human rights, economy and ecology.

The strategic aim of Kazakhstan’s chairmanship is holding the OSCE Summit in 2010, one of the major topics of which should be the situation in Afghanistan.

“We hope for support of Great Britain, one of the key players of the Organization, in implementation of the program of Kazakhstan’s chairmanship in the OSCE”, K.Tokayev said.

Kazakhstan as an acting OSCE chairman intends to do its best on using of the OSCE’s potential for rendering assistance to Afghanistan’s rehabilitation, the Speaker noted.

Appraising Kazakhstan’s authority in the world, the member of the House of Lords expressed confidence in successful implementation of the mission of chairmanship in the OSCE.

The Lord backed the idea of holding OSCE Summit in 2010, noting that it will be a fundamental event in the history of the Organization.
