FISU President Backs Almaty To Host Future Major Events After 2017 Winter Universiade

The President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev has attended the start of the torch relay of the winter Universiade 2017, the correspondent of RIA Novosti.

The torch relay of the 28th world winter Universiade kicks off on Wednesday in Astana, participation in the first stage will take about 60 people. In the second phase, the torch will give the representatives of the Republican headquarters and the flight will deliver to Alma-ATA for participation in the opening ceremony of the 28th world winter Universiade.

«We are igniting the fire of the 28th world winter Universiade to be held in Almaty starting on 29 January. The victory of our country became significant during the years of our independence. This scale of world events Kazakhstan has not carried out. Not every state can afford it, but it was Kazakhstan. I’m sure that we’ve prepared well and with honor will hold these competitions», — said Nazarbayev during the solemn ceremony.

He noted that structures built for this sporting event, will continue to serve future athletes.

Nazarbayev wished the team of Kazakhstan good luck in the upcoming competitions and lit the fire of the winter Universiade-2017.

From 29th January to February 8th, student-athletes from all over the world between the ages of 17 and 28 will flock to Almaty, Kazakhstan, to take part in Winter Universiade 2017.

Around 2,500 athletes from some 60 nations will compete in a total of 88 events in 12 winter sports.

Kazakhstan, fast emerging as a major centre for prestigious international events, will spend around $950 million on the games. The country is considered to be an ideal host, as much of the infrastructure from the 2011 Asian Winter Games, which took place in Amaty and Astana remains in place.
