Kazakhstan Gets New Modern Art Museum
The Astana Times reports that Kazakhstan will be soon have a new modern art museum, after local patrons from the Museum of Modern Art Public Foundation were given approval from the city of Almaty Planning Council for its construction in the Bostandyk district of Almaty. The proposed building will be on an area of land adjacent to the botanical garden of the northern part of Al-Farabi Avenue, with the museum possibly serving as a future entrance area to the garden as it currently is not accessible from the street. The developers of the project will be required to establish a school of contemporary art within the museum. As for the architecture of the new museum, the foundation hopes to attract Carlos Ferrater of Barcelona, Spain to the project.
This development comes after Kazakh president Nursultan Nazarbayev called for a strengthening of Almaty as a scientific, educational, and cultural center. Almaty is the largest city in Kazakhstan.
