PM: 2009 results are better than our forecastsThe results of 2009 turned out to be better than our forecasts, Prime Minister Karim Massimov has said at a briefing today.

“It is a pleasure for me to announce that Kazakhstan’s GDP growth was positive in 2009 –  at 0.5%-1%. Inflation was at 6.3% and unemployment rate – at 6.3%-6.5%”, Massimov said.

The Head of the Government said the country faced economic slowdown in the fourth quarter of 2008 and the first quarter of 2009. “The problems we set found their solution. 6.2 mln sq m of housing were put into service. All problematic projects connected with construction and housing investors will be solved soon. Many projects have been completed in 2009 and will be fully finished by 2010 end”, the PM stressed.

Head of State appreciated Road Map program: Kazakh PM

“The Head of the State highly appraised the Road Map program”, Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Massimov has said today at the session of the Government.

According to K.Massimov, the Road Map became one of the successful programs of the year that helped to neutralize the impact of the world financial crisis.

“It is obvious that we will continue the realization of the program nest year taking into consideration both positive ad negative experiences on 2009”, the Premier said.

Kazakhstan achieved positive GDP growth in 2009: PM

“In accordance with the preliminary results, Kazakhstan achieved positive GDP growth of 0.5-1% in 2009”, Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Massimov has said today at the session of the Government.

The estimated inflation rate will be up to 6.3%, unemployment rate – 6.3-6.5%, the Premier added.

Financial sector was biggest problem from economic point of view: Head of Government

“The financial sector was the biggest problem in 2009 from the economic point of view”, Kazakh Prime minister Karim Massimov said Tuesday at the session of the Kazakh Government.

The Prime Minister admitted that the Government had to take tough decisions. “As the result, the banking system was fully stabilized, external bank debt was essentially reduced”, K.Massimov said.

Kazakh language development – one of topical issues: PM

“The development of the Kazakh language is one of the topical issues”, Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Massimov said at the briefing Tuesday.

“A yare ago my Kazakh language was very poor. But as the Prime Minister I showed the way and started speak Kazakh language”, he noted.

According to him, every Kazakh must speak native language, the Government members must speak Kazakh and the representatives of other nations should understand the official language of the country.

Establishment of Customs Union to be most prominent event in 2010: PM

“We agreed to establish the Custom Union consciously and thoughtfully”, Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Massimov said at the briefing Tuesday.

“I believe that the agreements, achieved on the initiative of the Head of the State on establishment of the Custom Union and the Single Economic Space give an opportunity for Kazakh enterprises to extend their commodity market”, K.Massimov said.

“Rather the question is that we need to work on improvement of the competitive ability, labor capacity in order to be able to sell our goods at the market”, the Prime Minister stressed.

According to the Premier, the establishment of the Customs Union was a conscious, deliberate step. “We take into consideration all challenges and opportunities for the Kazakh economy”, the Head of the Government said.

According to him, the establishment of the Customs Union will be the most prominent event in 2010.

Government to focus on industrial policy, Road Map 2010 and small and medium businesses support

Implementation of the country’s industrial policy, Road Map program and support of small and medium businesses will be in spotlight of the Kazakh Government in 2010, Kazinform refers to the Prime Minister who has said it at the final press conference in Astana December 29.

The PM said that the banks must be provided with all conditions in order to let them finance economy and enterprises.

The Prime Minister noted that 2009 was probably one of the most difficult years for the world economy. The crisis impact on Kazakhstan was comparable to the collapse of the Soviet Union.

According to him, the experience gained by the Government, Mayors, enterprises and people is priceless.

“Kazakhstan negotiates joining the Karachaganak project”, Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Massimov has said today at the briefing in Astana.

“Concerning the project, the negotiation process between the Kazakh Ministry of Energy, KazMunaiGaz and the other participants is underway now”, he noted.

Besides, the Head of the Government stressed that the Kazakh Government follows the policy of protecting the national interests in the oil-and-gas field. “We reduced the tax burden in the beginning of 2009 due to the crisis, but we will increase it within the current Tax Code in the nearest future”, K.Massimov said.
