2nd World Speed Skating Championship kicks off in Almaty


2nd World Speed Skating Championship kicks off in AlmatyThe 2nd World Speed Skating Championship among students has kicked off at Medeu skating rink in Almaty.

77 athletes from Norway, Italy, Poland, Finland, the Netherlands and other countries will participate in the championship. Kazakhstan has the biggest team at the event comprised of 23 speed skaters.

During the four-day event, the athletes will compete for coveted medals in 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m and 10000m races.

According to FISU executive committee member Kairis Ulp, the championship will be held in line with the FISU and ISU standards and regulations. Almaty will be put to somewhat a test ahead of the 17th World Student Games that are scheduled for 2017.

“We hope the championship will develop and promote mass sport in Kazakhstan,” added Ilya Urazakov, head of the International Sports Projects Department of Almaty city.
