Kazakhstan elected to UNHRC Bureau

Kazakhstan elected to UNHRC BureauAsian Group members and observers of UN Human Rights Council supported the candidacy of Kazakhstan on which an official statement was made.

Members of the Asia-Pacific regional group in the UN Human Rights Council unanimously voted for the election of Kazakhstan Republic to the UNHRC Bureau for the year 2015, Kazpravda.kz reports with reference to the RK Foreign Ministry’s official website.

The decision was taken at a regular meeting of the Asia-Pacific Group, which took place on 28 November in Geneva. Members and observers of the UN Human Rights Council of the Asian Group supported the candidacy of Kazakhstan for the post, on which they made an official statement.

The UN Human Rights Council members are 47 countries, elected on the basis of equitable geographical distribution.

At the meeting, Kazakhstan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva, Ambassador Mukhtar Tleuberdi presented our country’s achievements in the observance and protection of human rights, referring at that to the successful defense on October 30, 2014 of Second National Report in the frames of the 2nd cycle of the Universal Periodic Review of the UNHR, also in the UN Committees – on the Elimination of racial Discrimination, on elimination of discrimination against women and against torture. Fruitful cooperation continues with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. In 2015 a visit to our country is expected of the recently appointed High Commissioner- Prince Zeid Ra’ad Zeid Al-Hussein.

Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan Republic in Geneva assumes his duties as Vice-President of the UN Human Rights Council from 1 January 2015.
