Credibility and succession demonstrated by Kazakhstan has made it a practical example to be followed by the entire international community, says agenziarepubblica.it.
One of the first decrees of President Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan, upon the country gaining independence in 1991, was the historic decision to close, on Aug. 29 the same year, the Semipalatinsk Nuclear test site, the second largest in the world.
Kazakhstan also voluntarily gave up the world’s fourth largest nuclear arsenal, with more than 110 ballistic missiles and more than 1400 nuclear warheads with the capacity to reach any point on this earth. Over 40 years there have been made 456 nuclear tests. 1.5 million people were affected by radiation. Kazakhstan genuinely believed in the futility of nuclear tests and weapons which can inflict unimagined catastrophic consequences on human beings and the environment.
The ATOM Project is an international campaign designed to do more than create awareness surrounding the human and environmental devastation caused by nuclear weapons testing. The ATOM Project hopes to affect real and lasting change by engaging millions of global citizens to permanently stop nuclear weapons testing by joining together to show the world’s leaders that the world’s citizens deserve and demand a world without nuclear weapons testing. The project was proposed by the Kazakhstan Government 29 August 2012 on the occasion of the International Day against Nuclear Tests in memory of the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site.
Nuclear-free world should be the primary concern of mankind. Therefore, the purpose of the ATOM project is to bring together the public who want to reduce armaments and abolish nuclear tests. Kazakhstan is the country that is of strategic importance for the international community because of its politically balanced contribution to the stabilization of the planet and throughout Central Asia. It remains an important pivot connecting Europe and Asia. Nursultan Nazarbayev has created the new country, not only from an economic point of view but also from a social and religious, based on the achievement of freedom and religious pluralism.
