EBRD giving KZT3.6bn loan for solid waste management project in Kyzylorda

European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) plans to allocate KZT 3.6bn for the project on solid waste management in Kyzylorda.
It was announced during the signing ceremony between Kyzylorda regional governorate, Kyzylorda city mayor’s office and the EBRD.
EBRD Director for Kazakhstan Janet Heckman said that the Bank prioritizes the development of green economy in the country. In this regard, the construction of a plant for mechanical and biological waste treatment is a priority not only for the EBRD, but for the whole Kazakhstan.
“We hope to implement this project as a model, for other cities and regions to use this experience”, she added.
“The solid waste management project is very important to our city, said in his turn the interim mayor of Kyzylorda Nurjan Akhatov. In 2012, 119 000 tons of solid waste was collected, and in 2013 – 135 000 tons. During this year the collection size increased by 15% and it has a steadily growing trend. According to the mayor, this project will also help to improve the ecological and sanitary-epidemiological situation of Kyzylorda region and to develop the solid waste processing management.
The project includes construction of the mechanical-biological waste treatment complex and of a new landfill and the elimination of the existing one, also the purchase of equipment and machinery. The sum of the bank’s funding is to be KZT 3,6bn (15mn Euro). The loan term is up to 13 years, including a grace period of 3 years.
