Astana and Riga plan to open charter flights on ChristmasThe opening of a direct charter flight between Astana and Riga was discussed during the Kazakh-Latvian business forum in Astana, which was attended by mayor of the Latvian capital Nil Ushakov, reports

Akim Imangali Tasmagambetov told the guests about the large-scale tasks in the area of infrastructure. “This is the construction of a new railway station, the expansion of the international airport. Today, the airport serves  3 million passengers a year, though it was planned to achieve such parameter by 2020.   Also, according to the mayor, Astana begins the implementation of projects within the transport strategy: upgrading of the rolling stock of bus parks,  the construction of a new system of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and construction of power systems (CHP-3).

In turn, Nil Ushakov said that the countries have much work to be done. “We do not have the highest turnover with Kazakhstan. It is very important for us to show Riga to Kazakh society. We are interested in selling food here. We will consider the options for charter flights on  Christmas New Year’s holiday for Kazakh tourists “- said Ushakov, adding that the Latvian side is also interested in the field of investment in real estate. The Forum discussed the need for the development of trade relations between Astana and Riga in the field of light and food industry, processing of agricultural and food products, tourism, construction of new roads, construction of bridges.

According to the press service of the municipal administration, for six months of 2014 the trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Latvia amounted to $ 155.6 million (exports – $ 130.1 million, import – $ 25.4 million). Turnover for 2013 totaled $ 361.2 million, including export – $ 302, 2 million, import – $ 59.0 million. Riga, along with Luxembourg, San Francisco, Taipei has the title of a “smart city”.

Astana mayor calls for closer economic cooperation with Riga


Astana city mayor Imangali Tasmagambetov believes that Astana and Riga have plenty of opportunities to expand economic cooperation.

“Sales turnover between our countries is relatively small, it totals only $350 million. It has made $155 million in the first half of 2014,” Mr. Tasmagambetov said at the Kazakhstani-Latvian business forum in the Kazakh capital Wednesday.

According to him, Kazakhstan imports timber, construction materials, fish products and pharmaceuticals from Latvia. “And I believe there are plenty of opportunities to expand our cooperation. We need to establish closer commercial ties,” the Astana city mayor added.
