Kazakhstan impresses world community with its democratic reforms - Greek Parliament SpeakerChairman of the Senate of the Kazakhstan Parliament, Vice Speaker of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met with Acting Speaker of the Greek Parliament Dimitrios Sioufas on October 10 in Athens; the Senate’s press service told Kazinform.

K. Tokayev briefed his counterpart on the socio-economic development and institutional reforms in Kazakhstan.

Mr. Sioufas expressed absolute support of Kazakhstan’s chairmanship in the OSCE. He noted the affinity of views of the two states regarding the issues on global energy security.

K. Tokayev emphasized the necessity of all-round development of interparliamentary cooperation. He noted that Kazakhstan would use the experience of Greece during its chairmanship in the OSCE. According to him, Kazakhstan pays much attention to the issues of trade-economic cooperation with Greece. Last year the volume of bilateral trade turnover amounted to USD 500 million. “We have big potential for extending mutually beneficial partnership in this sphere”, the Kazakhstan’s Speaker said.

K. Tokayev invited D. Sioufas to visit Kazakhstan. The Greek Parliament Speaker noted that it would be a great honor for him to visit our country, which “impresses the world community with the democratic reforms it is holding”.

Kazakh Senate Speaker makes a speech at “Energy Security and Environment” conference in Athens

The issues of optimal use of water resources with the purpose of ensuring human safety were discussed at “Energy Security and Environment” conference held within the framework of the Fall Meetings of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in Athens, Greece, On October 10; Kazinform refers to the press service of the Kazakh Parliament’s Senate.

Senate Chairman, Vice Speaker of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Kassym-Jomart Tokayev made a speech on this topic. He noted that in the process of globalization energy turns to be the main part of international diplomacy. He said that “when geopolitics is based on the attempts to gain access to energy resources the only imperative for all countries – producing, consuming and developing ones – should become the environmental protection”. “In this context development of renewable energy sources becomes a top priority”, K. Tokayev stressed.

Having pointed out that in June 2009 the Parliament of Kazakhstan adopted the law on support of alternative energy sources, Mr. Tokayev expressed an opinion that activity of the European Commission on updating the priorities of the EU regional strategy in the field of energy would promote development of renewable energy sources in the region.

Kazakhstan – potential key player in world nuclear market – Tokayev

Kazakhstan possessing significant reserves of natural uranium and production of nuclear fuel components has an opportunity to become one of the key players in the world nuclear market. Kazakh Senate Chairman, Vice Speaker of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said it at “Energy Security and Environment” conference held within the framework of the OSCE PA Fall Meetings in Athens on October 10.

As the Senate’s press service told Kazinform, the Speaker reminded of the Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev’s proposal to establish an international nuclear fuel bank under the International Atomic Energy Agency on the territory of our country.

Caspian Sea biosystem depends on environmental safety of oil operations – Tokayev

“We should recognize that the Caspian Sea biosystem is fully depends on environmental safety of oil operations held there”, Kazakh Senate Chairman, Vice Speaker of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said at “Energy Security and Environment” conference in Athens on October 10; the Senate’s press service informs.

Mr. Tokayev noted that Kazakhstan pays much attention to environmental protection of the Caspian Sea – main source of Kazakhstan’s hydrocarbons. Besides, he pointed out the priority tasks in the sphere of use of water resources consisting in joint use and management of trans-border water sources.

Within the framework of the EurAsEC Kazakhstan proposed to create a water-energy consortium and expressed willingness to build a Eurasian Water Center in Astana.

Kazakhstan is a reliable and responsible energy partner of the European Union. Kazakh Senate Chairman, Vice Speaker of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Kassym-Jomart Tokayev made it public at “Energy Security and Environment” conference held within the framework of the OSCE PA Fall Meetings in Athens last week; Kazinform refers to the Senate’s press service.

He also noted that Kazakhstan is among the top 15 countries in terms of its hydrocarbon resources and the 3rd largest energy products supplier to Europe among the non-OPEC countries after Russia and Norway.

“In whole our energy strategy is a diversified, balanced, rational and pragmatic one”, K. Tokayev emphasized.

Kazakhstan plans to hold “Eurasian Dimension of OSCE” Forum in May 2010

In May 2010 the Parliament of Kazakhstan plans to hold a forum of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly “Eurasian Dimension of OSCE” to discuss the issues of security, tolerance and development in Eurasia. Kazakh Senate Chairman, Vice Speaker of the OSCE PA Kassym-Jomart Tokayev made it public at the “Energy Security and Environment” conference in Athens last week.

According to Mr. Tokayev, the next year will be marked with the 35th anniversary of the OSCE, 20th anniversary of the Charter of Paris for a New Europe, the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II. “This is a good reason and wonderful opportunity to ask heads of states and governments to hold summit in Kazakhstan”, the Speaker said.
