Year of Kazakhstan's OSCE chairmanship to be momentous for Organization - Senate Speaker TokayevState and prospects of the Kazakh-Swiss bilateral relations were discussed at a meeting of the Kazakh Senate Speaker Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev and Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Confederation Micheline Calmy-Rey in Astana Wednesday.

Speaking on inter-parliamentary ties development K. Tokayev noted necessity of their activation since “this is an important component of inter-state relations”.

In this view the Senate Chairman stressed importance of the last year official visit of Chairman of the National Council of the Swiss National Council Andre Bugnon to Astana.

With the aim of expanding contacts between our legislative bodies, the Kazakh Senate will establish a deputy group on cooperation with the Federal Assembly of Switzerland, Tokayev said.

Touching upon Kazakhstan’s OCSE chairmanship in 2010, K. Tokayev informed Micheline Calmy-Rey of establishment of a special commission on OSCE chairmanship and adoption of Road to Europe state program.

“The year of Kazakhstan’s presidency in the OSCE is of great importance for the Organization. The forthcoming year is also remarkable for several jubilee dates, like the 35th anniversary of signing the Helsinki Final Act, 20th anniversary of the Paris Charter for new Europe and the 65th anniversary of Victory in the World War II”, the Senate Speaker noted.

“These dates give a handle to analyze the current role of the OSCE in Europe and its future in the context of security and cooperation”, Tokayev said.

The Speaker focused also on the idea of holding the OSCE summit in Astana.

In turn, Micheline Calmy-Rey spoke for strengthening relations between Kazakhstan and Switzerland. According to the diplomat, opening the Swiss in Astana will promote both countries’ cooperation.
