Mayor of Almaty Akhmetzhan Yesimov met with President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Sir Suma Chakrabarti. Within the frames of the event the mayor, head of the EBRD and director of the company Almaty Kala Jarykh Baurjan Ibrayev signed a loan agreement for the project “Modernization of street lighting of Almaty” in the amount of $ 34 million.
Yesimov noted that 4 projects totaling more than $ 120 million in the transport sector have been already implemented in the framework of cooperation of the city with EBRD since 2009.
– Signing of the agreement with EBRD gives start to a new project “Modernization of street lighting,” which corresponds to the strategy of “green” economy in Kazakhstan. Its implementation will allow us to introduce innovations and energy efficient technologies in the street lighting system of the city, – Yesimov said.
The mayor informed on the development of such major projects as construction of a LRT line, modern landfill for recycling of solid wastes, and the introduction of electronic ticketing in public transport.
– The EBRD is ready to support the project on the introduction of modern energy efficient lighting system in the streets of Almaty. This will help substantially save energy. We have already financed the purchase of 400 ecological buses working on compressed natural gas and almost 200 trolleybuses, – said Chakrabarti.
The sides also discussed new forms of cooperation in the implementation of projects. Thus, the mayor proposed to consider the possibility of developing new mechanisms of direct financing through the bank’s participation in the authorized capital of the enterprises of Almaty on the principle of public-private partnership. It was offered to include representatives of this financial institution in the supervisory board or board of directors of the largest enterprises of the metropolis.
Chakrabarti expressed interest in these proposals on the participation of the Bank in the city life. He noted that the municipal administration and the EBRD have established strong long-term relationships.
– I am confident that our joint projects in Almaty will become a model for other regions. In particular, the project on HSW management has great potential, he said.
The signed project “Modernization of street lighting of Almaty” is the first concrete project on “green” economy in the frames of EXPO 2017.
