Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in solar energy area was signed by the representatives of the RK Ministry of Oil and Gas, Total Company and SunPower Company.
The document implements a unique project C7 in Astana, based on the latest technology in solar energy area. The initiative to fulfill the project in Kazakhstan was offered by Mr. Yves-Louis Darricarrere – member of the Executive Committee of the Total, in May 2013 at the 26th plenary session of the Foreign Investors’ Council, chaired by President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
The project based on the latest development of the SunPower company is unique in its technical parameters. Its efficiency coefficient exceeds all other existing technologies in the world. In addition, it is noted that Kazakhstan has considerable potential to produce solar energy (over 300 sunny days per year in some regions).
The project, highly appreciated by the President, will be implemented in 2014-2016 at the territory of the Nazarbayev University with the direct participation of the SunPower experts. Successful implementation of the project will open up new opportunities for more ambitious projects, in particular construction of solar power plants of industrial-scale and establishment of joint ventures.
The French Total Company is one of the world’s largest oil and gas companies, involved in extensive research and development of alternative energy sources. Besides, the Total is a long-term strategic investor and partner of the Republic of Kazakhstan, contributing significantly to development of local content, fulfilment of joint scientific and technological research, development of “green” energy, training of highly qualified scientific personnel and strengthening of a research and innovation cluster at the Nazarbayev University.
