Yermek Tursunov’s Shal long-listed for Oscar

Shal (Old Man) by Kazakhstan director Yermek Tursunov has been included into the long-list of the American Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language Film category, Tengrinews reports.
Shal drama is based on Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea. The film tells a story of the family of an old man, his daughter-in-law and grandson, who live in the middle of an endless steppe. They mustn’t argue, as their circle is very small. They must learn to forgive each other and be wise to hold on to the true values. It is important for the old man to teach his grandson the right things.
The total of 76 foreign films are competing in the 1st stage of the contest for the world’s most prestigious award.The Oscar short-list will be unveiled on January 16, 2014. The awarding ceremony will be held on March 2, 2014 in Los Angeles.
The previous movie made by Tursunov Kelin succeeded in entering a short-list of the Oscar awards. The movie didn’t get the main prize but it was acknowledged by international film critics.
