The world sporting achievements are the best indicators of the country’s opportunities. In the XXI century, only a strong and healthy nation can be competitive. So I tasked the Government to involve 30 percent of the population in physical education and sport by 2020. The success of our athletes is a promotion of a healthy lifestyle. And if every Kazakhstani does the things as our Olympians do, Kazakhstan is to become an advanced country.
Sport has been and will always be one of the most important factors, influencing the image of a state in the world. Our country is now among sport-achieving nations, and Astana has contributed to it.
Astana has become a symbol of sporting victories of Kazakhstanis, and its name is given to many national teams of our country.
Astana has about 20 major sports facilities, opened for professional athletes and local residents. According to the statistics, every fourth Astana resident visits gyms today.
One of the first sports facilities of the young capital was the Palace of Sports “Kazakhstan”. In November 2010, an additional ice rink of 1 000 seats was commissioned.
Another important sports facility in Astana is the sport-center “Daulet”, also known as the National Tennis Center that hosts national and international competitions of the highest level not only in tennis but also in many other sports.
In 2009, “Astana-Arena” stadium was opened. The first match was judged by famous Italian referee Pierluigi Collina and President Nursultan Nazarbayev made a symbolic first kick of the ball. Later the stadium hosted the finals of Kazakhstan Cup in 2009 and 2010, the Super Cup of the Republic in 2010 and 2011 and the opening ceremony of the Asian Winter Games in 2011.
In order to meet the participants of the Asian Games, a range of sports facilities of international class were constructed in Astana, among them are the Ice Palace “Alau”, equipped with ultra-modern equipment, allowing to create so-called “fast ice”.
During the 7th Winter Asian Games 9 continental records were made in “Alau” palace, which is 11th (out of 641) in the world ranking of skating rinks. Major international competitions and training camps are held in the Ice Palace.
The cycle track – in the shape of a cyclist helmet – has already become one of the most original sports complexes. It has a fitness center, swimming pool, basketball court, skating rink, conference halls, restaurant and hotel.
After the Asian Games this facility is used for various national and international competitions, as well as for training camps.
Astana Palace of martial arts of 5 000 seats and an Ice Palace of 10 000 seats will be opened by 2017.
