Decade of Cultural Rapprochement starting

In a meeting in Astana yesterday, Kazakhstan National Commission for UNESCO and ISESCO tallied up the work in 2012, and identified priorities for the current year.
The meeting was chaired by the head of the National Commission I.Tasmagambetov, presentations were made by the Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to UNESCO Olzhas Suleimenov, Culture and Information Minister Mukhtar Kul-Muhammed, Environment Minister Mr. Kapparov, the Director of the UNESCO Cluster Office in Almaty Sergey Lazarev and others.
Olzhas Suleimenov congratulated everyone on the start of the cultural rapprochement decade, initiated by Kazakhstan (2013-2022 years) and approved by the 67th session of the UN General Assembly.
One of the most significant events on Kazakhstan-UNESCO cooperation record over the time in question was the first official visit of the UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova to Kazakhstan. She took part in an expanded meeting of the National Commission, timed to the 20th anniversary of Kazakhstan membership in UNESCO, during which an agreement was signed between the RK government and UNESCO for the establishment of the Almaty regional glaciological center under the auspices of this international organization. Last year, National Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) was established the country. Among the priority tasks of the committee is drafting the conception for and listing of the intangible cultural heritage of Kazakhstan.
Mukhtar Kul-Muhammed said that systematic work should be carried out on the preparation and submission to UNESCO of the national and multinational nominations for inscription on the Representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity and the list of intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent protection. Kazakhstan intends to join the multinational applications “Nowruz” and “Falconry” and Kyrgyzstan’s application for entering “Aitys” and “yurt” on the UNESCO list. First national applications – “Karazhorga” and “Orteke” have been sent to the Organization.
Honorary Director of the A.Margulan Institute of Archaeology Carl Baipakov said that in February this year, papers on cross-border nomination were presented to the World Heritage Centre – for “Monuments of the Silk Road: the initial segment and routes of the Tien Shan corridor.” It includes 22 monuments of China, 3 of Kyrgyzstan and 8 of Kazakhstan: Kiyalyk, Talgar, Karamengen in Almaty region, and Aktobe, Akyrtas, Kulan, Ornek, Kostobe in Zhambyl region.
Chairman of the Committee for Science under the MES Nurlan Ybyrayym detailed on Kazakhstan’s participation in educational programs and on cooperation with UNESCO. He also mentioned a sensational discovery of two medieval treasures on Sairam site, South-Kazakhstan region, made by the expedition of the A.Margulan Institute of Archaeology.
Chairman of the National Committee “Man and Biosphere” Roman Yaschenko characterized as a landmark the inclusion of “Korgalzhyn State Nature Reserve” in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve nomination. Cross-border nomination of “Western Tien-Shan” is under preparation that includes Kazakhstan’s eight protected areas (Aksu-Zhabagly and Karatau reserves, three sections of Sairam-Ugam National Park), Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan sites. In teamwork with the Russian Federation, the “Altai” cross-border reserve is under creation.
The work of Kazakhstan National Federation of UNESCO Clubs was presented by its chairman, vice-minister of oil and gas Bulat Akchulakov.
An international UNESCO conference took place in the elapsed year – “Alma-Ata + 20” to mark the 20th year of the Almaty Declaration on promoting independent and pluralistic media in Asia, also the Fifth Conference of ISESCO Environment Ministers that resolved on opening of ISESCO Regional Office in Almaty.
In Astana, the UNESCO recommendations regarding the Haji Ahmed Yasavi mausoleum were considered.
At the meeting I.Tasmagambetov named this-year priorities, the centerpiece events of which are to be an international forum dedicated to the Decade of the Rapprochement of Cultures that will assemble the UN and UNESCO leadership, prominent politicians, scientists and artists, also the international forum timed to the official launch in UNESCO frames of the world’s first comprehensive web portal on the Silk Road.
On 2014-2015 calendar of memorable dates and events of UNESCO is the 100th birthday of the film producer and actor Shaken Aimanov and writer Ilyas Esenberlin.
