“Smart city” for “green” exhibition

On the EXPO-2017 territory, the Astana Smarter City Solution Centre is to be built.
The relevant memorandum between Astana town administration and IBM East Europe / Asia Ltd was signed yesterday at the conference “Smart Astana 2012”, organized by JSC «Astana Innovations». The “Astana – smart city Centre” is created to implement the project of Smart Astana and for the development of Astana agglomeration.
Welcoming the participants, the mayor of Astana Imangali Tasmagambetov said that each city, especially with little history, is seeking its way to success.
– The success of Astana is not in the development of big industries and endless growth of the city and the number of companies, but in building of the enabling conditions for innovative economy, focused on HT and knowledge-intensive production, introduction of “green economy”, – he said. – Our task is to structurally and functionally prepare the economy of Astana for development of such innovations. Pre-requisites for it are there.
The concept of Smart Astana was approved at the last conference on Astana Innovations. Already in this year, several projects have been launched, with social sector piloting. The next stage involves the urban and public utilities. Since the transfer of the capital, the share of Astana in GDP went 7 times up, investments- 30 times up. With the creation of “Astana – new city” SEZ, throughout the last 10 years the volume of attracted investments made nearly KZT 2 trillion, i.e. $ 13.3 billion due to the created conditions and granted guarantees, said Tasmagambetov. And preparations for EXPO 2017 open up new investment opportunities.
Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Industry and New Technologies Asset Isekeshev said Smart Astana is developing into a serious dialogue platform for innovation and cited specific examples of successful implementation of this global trend in other countries.
The share of innovative companies in the country went up to make 7%, the innovation output grew 1.5 times, expenses on research and development increased by a third. Already, first solar and wind stations have appeared, next year construction will be started of large wind farms – A.Isekeshev said, stressing that the Smart Astana is a powerful incentive for other regions of Kazakhstan.
Deputy head of the Presidential Administration Bakhyt Sultanov and vice president of IBM Fiona McMaster congratulated Kazakhstan on winning the right for hosting EXPO-2017 in Astana. The conference continued in three workshops – “Security”, “Cloud Technology” and “Green Technology.” Besides, Smart Astana projects were displayed in the exhibition, which were launched in 2011-2012.
