Kazakhstan’s population topped 16.7 million in H1 2012

As of July 1, 2012, Kazakhstan’s population was estimated at 16,793,900, Chairman of the Kazakh Statistics Agency Alikhan Smailov told a briefing.
“Urban population is 9,187,700 (54.7%), rural – 7,606,200 (45.3%). Compared with the beginning of 2012, population in the whole country increased by 118.5 thousand, or 0.7%. Natural increase of the population in the first half of this year was 114.9 thousand people (in January-June 2011 – 107.1 thousand people),” said the head of the agency.
A total of 187.4 thousand births were registered in the first half-year. This is by 3.1% more than in the first half of 2011. The total birth rate is 22.4 births per 1000 people.
The number of deaths in the country for the 1st half year was 72.5 thousand people, which is 2.8% less than in January-June 2011. The overall mortality rate is 8.7 deaths per 1000 people.
