Kazakh Olympic medalists may be eligible for a free apartment in Kazakhstan’s second city Almaty – on one condition, the deputy mayor of the city said on Tuesday.
“If the Olympian, participating in the Olympics in London, wins a gold, silver, or bronze, the city government will provide the apartment,” the Kursiv.kz news agency reported Almaty Deputy Mayor Serik Seidumanov as saying.
“However, housing will [only be available] for the ones who need it. If an athlete already has a property, they are not entitled to the apartment.”
Kazakh gold medalists are awarded $250,000, while silver medalists earn $150,000. Bronze medalists are awarded $75,000.
Kazakhstan now has six gold medals and one bronze medal in the London Olympics.
Twenty-nine athletes of the 115 in total on the Kazakh national team are residents of Almaty.
Elsewhere in the Central Asian region, opposition political party the Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan (IRPT) said it will provide a two-room apartment in the Tajik capital Dushanbe to all Tajik medalists.
Tajik female boxer Mavzuna Chorieva is now in the semi-finals for women’s lightweight boxing after defeating Chinese boxer Dong Cheng on Monday. Chorieva faces Irish boxer Katie Taylor on Wednesday.
