Prize-Winning Slogan Seeks to Build Social Awareness of Ecological Issues

The nationwide contest for the best motto and essay on the theme “Energy of the Future”, Support EXPO-2017! Support Your Country” presented its results on December 12, 2011, and announced the winning slogan as “Save Today. Survive Tomorrow”.
The contest lasted from 12 September to 30 October 2011 as part of the bidding campaign of Astana to host an International Specialized Exhibition EXPO-2017.
“It is very important that Kazakhstan’s students and schoolchildren have demonstrated a great interest to the topic “Energy of the Future,” Kayrat Tilebaldinov, Deputy Chairman of the Trade Committee of Ministry of Economic Development and Trade and chair of the contest committee said. “The review of the applications has clearly shown that a lot of gifted youth not only have their own opinion on energy sources of the future but can propose specific designs in the field of alternative energy as well.”
“The active involvement of youth and creative collectives will push forward our bid to host the International Exhibition EXPO-2017 in Astana,” he added. “It may well be that current participants of the contest “Energy of the Future” will take part in the organization of an expo in Astana in five years’ time”.
Applications were received from students from across the country. A total of 60 applications have been submitted in Kazakh, Russian and English.
Vladimir Kliakin, Deputy Director of the Department of Electric Power and Coal Industry of the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies and a member of the contest committee said, “The initiative, energy and creativeness of the youth are our future. What we expected from the contest was to consolidate the youth, to encourage their activity, to involve them in solving the issues of ecology and the power sector. I think the goal has been achieved.”
“I am confident the essays of young students will become a spark for realization of innovative projects in the sphere of energy saving. These modern and progressive ideas will help us shift to sustainable use of energy,” he added.
Works of the contestants have demonstrated the readiness of the young generation to address the issues of energy and power resources. Essays offered a substantial analysis of objective data demonstrating research rigour. Some of them were very emotional, and the mottos reflected great interest of youngsters in the current state and the future of alternative energy. Virtually all works showed a positive attitude to the development of renewable power sources.
The essay of Magzhan Kutzhan, a participant from the Karagandy Oblast, was announced the winner. “It is a great honour for me to win the contest “Energy of the Future”, I am glad to meet the expectations of the members of the contest committee,” Magzhan said after the award ceremony. “I hope in the future I will also be able to take active part in such contests, and encourage others to support Astana’s bid to host the prestigious exhibition EXPO-2017!” he added.
Gaukhar Zhanzholova, a student of the Lev Gumilyov Eurasian National University, won the contest for the best motto: “Save Today. Survive Tomorrow”.
“I am so happy my motto has been chosen, it came as a real surprise,” Gaukhar said. “I want to tell all citizens of Kazakhstan: Save our resources today. And survive tomorrow!”
The panel also noted the works of 10 more students for creativity, detailed review of the topic and scholarly presentation.
