President Nazarbayev demonstrated leadership on non-proliferation of mass destruction weapons - W. BurnsHead of the State Nursultan Nazarbayev has received the Under Secretary of State  for Political Affairs of the USA, William J. Burns today, the Presidential press service reports.

W. Burns extended the Kazakh President warm wishes from his US counterpart B. Obama. W. Burns highlighted that the visit of the American delegation to Astana headed by him reflects “high priority President Obama gives to the relations with Kazakhstan”.

The Under Secretary of State also informed N. Nazarbayev of the results of the US Leader’s visit to Moscow.

American President’s visit to Moscow was successful. Washington lays special emphasis to the good relations with Russia. The USA highly appraises the relations and cooperation with Kazakhstan too, W. Burns said.

During the talk the parties focused on the prospects of development of the bilateral cooperation, ensuring regional security and non-proliferation of the mass destruction weapons.

Kazakhstan supports US President B. Obama’s initiative on holding a global summit on nuclear security in New York in 2010, N. Nazarbayev noted.

The parties also discussed international issues representing mutual interest, in particular, problems of stabilization of the situation in Afghanistan.

“President N. Nazarbayev demonstrated leadership regarding the issues on non-proliferation of the mass destruction weapons. The USA also adheres to this principle. Mutual understanding reached between Presidents Dmitry Medvedev and Barack Obama  on entering into agreement on further reduction of nuclear arsenal proves it. Therefore the USA highly appraises the leadership demonstrated by the Kazakh President”, W. Burns said at a briefing.

Kazakhstan and USA ready to enhance multilateral coop


Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Massimov has met with Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs of the USA William J. Burns in Ukimet Uyi today; Kazinform refers to the PM’s press service.

The parties discussed the issues of further development of trade-economic cooperation between Kazakhstan and the US.

They also exchanged opinions on the issues of formation of Customs Union between Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus as well as Kazakhstan’s joining the WTO.

Mr. Burns confirmed interest of the US in further integration of Kazakhstan’s economic system into the world economy.
