Kazakhstan Presents Its EXPO 2017 Bid for Astana in South AfricaRapil Zhoshybayev, Executive Secretary of Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry, led an official delegation to the Republic of South Africa this week to present Astana’s bid to host the International Specialized Exhibition in 2017.

The presentation was shown as part of the conference titled “The Twenty Years of Kazakhstan’s Independence and Prospects for Kazakhstan-South African Cooperation” in the cities of Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria.

In South Africa, Kazakhstan underscored its intention to raise the issue of energy consumption to a global level.

The world’s largest uranium miner and home to enormous deposits of oil and gas, Kazakhstan proposed “Energy of the Future” as the theme for the 2017 exposition in Astana. This once again confirms the country’s commitment to the development of alternative energy and environment protection. Astana is convinced that the proposed topic will help find solutions to global problems of environmental challenges and lack of energy. It is believed that EXPO 2017 in Astana will serve as a platform for the demonstration of humanity’s achievements and latest developments in the field of energy.

The theme will also highlight a wide spectrum of other related issues, such as energy conservation, promoting alternative energy sources, including solar, wind energy, marine resources, ocean and geothermal waters. These issues have grown in prominence in light of increasing scientific recognition that expanding consumption of coal, oil and gas in recent decades has aggravated the problem of global warming.

On November 14th, a Kazakhstan delegation will also travel to New Delhi, India, to present the country’s bid for the 2017 exposition. The national presentation will take place in the framework of the annual India International Trade Fair (IITF), devoted to India’s culture and business cooperation with other regions and states. The event provides Kazakhstan with a good opportunity to present its bid to a wider public at India’s largest convention centre Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, the venue of the fair.

Earlier this year, Rapil Zhoshybayev officially submitted Astana’s application to host EXPO 2017 at the 149th session of the International Expositions Bureau (BIE) General Assembly in Paris. Kazakhstan’s Ambassador to France Nurlan Danenov said that the country was committed to meeting all requirements set by the bureau and that it would ensure favourable conditions to successfully host the event in Astana.

The next 150th session of BIE General Assembly in Paris will take place on November 22-23 this year.

The decision on the venue for the 2017 exhibition will be taken through a vote by all 157 member states of the BIE at its General Assembly in December 2012. Astana’s only competitor for the 2017 expo is Belgian city of Liege which has proposed connectivity as the theme for its bid.
