Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Yerzhan Kazykhanov has held the meeting with Diplomatic Corps from the OIC Member States.
As the Kazakh MFA’s press service reports, he sincerely congratulated foreign diplomats on the occasion of the Holy month of Ramadan and upcoming Eid Ul-Fitr, expressing his good wishes of health, prosperity and well-being to them, their families and friends. “The Holy month of Ramadan and its fasting are once again upon us. These days are a crucial occasion to emphasize the lofty values of Islam and its human principles, and underscore the meanings of solidarity among Muslims,” he said.
“Regrettably, the very same time our brothers and sisters in Somalia are experiencing disastrous humanitarian crisis with more than 4 million Somalis facing the risk of dying from hunger. I am proud that our Organization responded promptly and met this challenge to the veracity of Islamic cooperation,” the Minister outlined.
As is known, on 17th of August in Istanbul the Emergency Meeting of OIC Executive Committee was convened with participation of the Somalia’s President, the Prime Minister of Turkey, as well as ministers and top government officials from 36 OIC Member States. The Istanbul Declaration confirms pledges of the Members States for humanitarian and financial assistance to the people of Somalia amounting to more than USD 350 million.
“We also agreed to establish an ad-hoc group on Somalia, and to hold an expert meeting on creation of a food security mechanism, as a long term decision to prevent possible famines in the OIC area,” Minister Y.Kazykhanov noted in this connection.
Y.Kazykhanov noted that “it is with a great concern that we are witnessing spread of violence and tragic losses of life in different parts of the Ummah during the holy days of Ramadan. Death of civilians in the Gaza Strip has led to more tension and instability in the region. Situation in Libya is yet another test for our solidarity.”
As the Chairman of the OIC CFM Kazakhstan is of a view that fulfilment of the OIC Resolution “On humanitarian assistance to Libya” adopted this June would be very timely and adequate reaction to this crisis.
According to the Kazakh Minister, all these latest developments require our careful assessment, encouraging us to consider how our Organisation can play a more active role in addressing such issues in the future.
In this connection, Mr. Y.Kazykhanov drew attention of the meeting participants to the upcoming Annual Coordination Meeting of the OIC Foreign Ministers in New York, on the sidelines of the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
