Kazakh Foreign Minister held talks with Belgian PM in BrusselsDuring his visit to Brussels Kazakh Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov held a meeting with Prime Minister of Belgium Yves Leterme to discuss a wide array of topics concerning bilateral relations.

Kazykhanov gave Mr. Yves Leterme a congratulations letter from President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev addressed to the King of the Belgians Albert II on the occasion of the upcoming Belgium’s National Day, which is celebrated on July 21. In addition to congratulations the letter covers Kazakhstan’s approaches to the development of bilateral relations.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister of Belgium described the Kazakh-Belgian relations as very intense, and reminded of the last year’s visit of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev to Belgium and Yves Leterme’s visit to Kazakhstan for the December OSCE Summit in Astana. “I was impressed by the dynamism and striving for constant improvement and development in Kazakhstan,” the Premier noted.

The sides stressed that the countries still did not realize a full potential of economic cooperation. They also considered the issues of nuclear energy, and discussed Kazakhstan’s initiatives on nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament.

It was noted that Kazakhstan was planning to cancel visa requirements for citizens of 34 countries included in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Currently, the Government of Kazakhstan is working on it on the instruction of President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

Kazakh FM attended OSCE Troika ministerial meeting

Within the framework of his visit to Brussels Kazakh Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov took part in the OSCE Troika annual ministerial meeting.

The other attendees were Baroness Catherine Ashton, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier, OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Audronius A?ubalis, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ireland Eamon Gilmore.

The European foreign ministers praised Kazakhstan’s chairmanship in the OSCE and the Astana summit of the organization last year, which they firmly believe, gave a powerful impetus and breathed new life into the development of the OSCE.

The meeting discussed the preparations for the OSCE Ministerial Council meeting in Vilnius, the resumption of the Transnistria talks in the ‘5+2’ format, the support for democratic processes in the southern Mediterranean and a number of other issues.

Kazykhanov met with EU High Representative Catherine Ashton

Kazakh Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov held talks with Baroness Catherine Ashton, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy in Brussels.

“I am always amazed by a breathtaking list of Kazakhstan’s initiatives in the international arena. We look forward to a long-term relationship,” the EU High Representative said. The parties discussed issues of EU – Kazakhstan cooperation in light of agreements reached between President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev and President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy during the top level meetings held in 2010.

An important issue of the discussion was the negotiation process concerning a new basic agreement on advanced partnership and cooperation between Brussels and Astana. The two sides exchanged position papers, presenting their vision of this document.

Kazykhanov also informed Mrs. Ashton that Kazakhstan would promote its initiative on simplifying the visa regime between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the EU. It was noted that on the instruction of President Nursultan Nazarbayev, the Government of Kazakhstan is working on simplification of visa regime for the 34 member states of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, up to the complete abolition of visa requirements for citizens of these countries, which will stimulate the flow of business and investment in Kazakhstan.

They also discussed issues of cooperation in trade and economy, and removing Kazakh airlines from the EU blacklist.
