WEEKLY REVIEW. We will do everything to be proud of Astana - Prime Minister MassimovGovernment of Kazakhstan held a regular sitting on Monday, June 13, where Kazakh Minister of Education and Science Bakytzhan Zhumagulov informed that the average test result of the Unified National Test has been 86.6 pointes, which is 1.5 points higher than the last year’s result.

The number of graduates also increased from 107,000 last year to 129,000 this year.

The same day Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Massimov held a session on the development of Astana on the instructions of President Nursultan Nazarbayev given on June 3. The Premier urged Astana Mayor Imangali Tasmagambetov, ministers of agriculture, education and science, head of Kazakh agency for construction and housing infrastructure to work on the creation of a “food” and a green belt around Astana, construction of a student quarter. “We will do everything to be proud of Astana,” said Prime Minister Massimov.

“Astana is the best city. We have set to fulfilling the President-set tasks,” the PM posted on his official Twitter page.

Besides, on Monday Karim Massimov talked with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan over the phone and congratulated him on the victory of Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party in parliamentary elections.

On Tuesday, June 14, the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan met with Chinese President Hu Jintao, who arrived in Astana for a state visit.

The parties discussed joint projects in transportation and processing of energy resources, cooperation in agriculture and non-oil sectors of the economy. The two sides also considered prospects of development of trade, investment, transport and border cooperation and interaction in the use of transboundary water resources.

The same day Massimov talked with his Belarusian counterpart Mikhail Miasnikovich over the phone to discuss the issues of bilateral relations, Customs Union and Single Economic Space.

Besides, the Kazakh Premier held a meeting with Yuri Fedotov, Executive Director of United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

During the talks with President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who arrived in Astana to attend the 10th jubilee summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the situation in the region was discussed.

On Friday, June 17, Karim Massimov held a sitting on the issues of socio-economic development of the city of Almaty.

The attendees considered implementation of the President’s instructions given to the Government, akimats (administrations) of Almaty and Almaty region on elaboration and adoption of a package of measures on development of the southern capital.

In particular, there was discussed a set of measures on development of the transport system of the city and surrounding areas, creation of a food belt, development of a regional financial center, tourism, construction of dormitories, development of small and medium business and etc.

Then, Prime Minister Karim Massimov and his Tajik colleague Okil Okilov discussed the issues of bilateral relations.

Massimov also met with his Spanish counterpart Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero to debate cooperation in trade and investments, CU establishment and realization of the country’s forced industrialization program. The Spanish Premier arrived in Astana on June 16 for an official visit.
