Kazakhstan, U.S. split matches in Germany

Mikhail Kukushkin earned Kazakhstan a split with the United States in singles matches Tuesday at the World Team Cup tennis event in Germany.

Kukushkin battled back from a set down for a 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory over Sam Querrey. Kukushkin managed five service breaks over the last two sets to claim the win.

That offset Mardy Fish’s 6-4, 6-2 win for the United States over Andrey Golubev in which Fish won 57 percent of the points and left the Red Group series to be decided in a doubles match Wednesday.

The other Red Group match Tuesday saw Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Chela defeat Sweden’s Christian Lindell 6-1, 6-1. Chela lost only three points over seven service games.

Argentina and the United States are each 1-0 in the Red Group. Kazakhstan and Sweden are 0-1.

Serbia picked up a win in the Blue Group as Viktor Troicki and Dusan Lajovic claimed singles wins over their Russian opponents. Troicki beat Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-1 by wining 60 percent of the points when receiving serve. Lajovic was a 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 winner over Igor Andreev, cashing in his only two break-point chances, both of which were in the third set.

Germany got a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 victory from Florian Mayer over Spain’s Marcel Granollers in the day’s other match.

Germany is 1-0 in round-robin play while Russia and Serbia are 1-1 and Spain is 0-1.
