Due to N. Nazarbayev's outstanding leadership Semipalatinsk polygon became symbol of hope - UN Sec GenDue to outstanding and visionary leadership of Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev, the Semipalatinsk nuclear testing site has been transformed into a symbol of hope. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said taking the floor at the OSCE Summit in Astana today.

“This year I had the privilege to visit the former polygon. Due to outstanding and visionary policy of President Nursultan Nazarbayev it was transformed from the site of tragic events into the symbol of hope”, he noted.

As Ban Ki-moon highlighted, the Semipalatinsk polygon has become the epicenter of nuclear-weapons-free area of Asia. “Other regions should follow this example”, he added.

Aral Sea tragedy should make us adopt measures to prevent similar disasters and new security threats – Ban Ki-moon

“Tragic destiny of the Aral Sea should make the whole global community adopt measures on prevention of similar disasters”, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said taking the floor at the OSCE Summit in Astana today.

“We must strengthen our efforts for fighting with climate change. Ecological management of water and energy resources gains more and more importance in the OSCE area too”, Ban Ki-moon noted.

“Aral Sea tragedy should make the whole the global community adopt measures on prevention of similar disasters in future and new threats to security”, he stressed.

International community achieved progress in nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, but threats still remain – Ban Ki-moon

The international community reached progress in nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced it in the course of the OSCE Summit in Astana today.

“Despite this, the threats remain and I appreciate the work of the OSCE participating states in this direction. In particular, I welcome the current cooperation in implementation of the UN Security Council resolution 1540 on Non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction”, Ban Ki-moon noted.

According to him, the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty is of paramount importance for nuclear non-proliferation.

“I have repeatedly urged all countries to take ambitious steps, especially, those states which ratification is needed for enactment of the Treaty”, he added.
