Population of Kazakhstan is 16,009,600 people – 2009 census

According to the 2009 census, the population of Kazakhstan was 16,009,600 people, said Alikhan Smailov, the chairman of the State Agency for Statistics.
This is a 6.9% growth as compared with the previous census that was conducted in 1999.
“As many as 8,662,400 people live in the cities and towns and 7,347,200 in the rural areas, or 54.1% and 45.9% of the whole population. The urban population increased by 2.4%, the rural by 12.6%,” he told a Friday press conference in Astana.
In 1999, the ratio of the urban and rural population was 56.4% and 43.6% respectively.
According to the Statistics Agency, the number of men amounted to 7,712,200 (an increase of 6.9% compared with the previous census), women to 8,297,400 people (up 6.8%).
The ethnic structure of the total population was as follows: Kazakh 63.1%, Russian 23.7%, Uzbeks 2.9%, Ukrainians 2.1%.
“Thus, taking into account the 2009 census the population of Kazakhstan numbered 16.372 million people as at October 1, 2010,” Mr Smailov said.
