Special session on Aral Sea problem held in European ParliamentСовещание BRUSSELS. October 13. KAZINFORM /Dimash Syzdykov/ Special session devoted to the problem of the Aral Sea organized by Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office for Ecology and Environment Struan Stevenson was held on October 12 in the European Parliament in Brussels.

As Kazakh Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office Konstantin Zhigalov noted, Kazakhstan and the European Union actively cooperate on the issues of environment. He reminded that in 2007 the EU adopted the Strategy for Central Asia, which also covered the ecological problems. A year later Germany launched the Berlin Water Initiative. Italy also pays much attention to this issue. Thus we see how much importance the European Union attaches to the problems of water an ecology.

United Nations Under-Secretary-General Jan Kubis, European Commissioner for Science & Research Janez Potocnik, Head of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy Miroslav Jenca, EU Special Representative for Central Asia Pierre Morel, Vice Speaker of Uzbek Parliament B. Alikhanov and ambassadors of all Central Asian states as well as representatives of expert community attended the session. The event is held within the framework of the Kazakhstan’s chairmanship in the OSCE.
