Promotion of Renewable energy use in KazakhstanThe UNESCO cluster office in Almaty within the frame of work plan for 2010-2011 is implementing a project to promote renewable energy sources (RES) in the Republic of Kazakhstan and will conduct on October 6-7, 2010 in Astana a training workshop on «Legal, Scientific, Technical and Economic Aspects of Use of Renewable Energy in Kazakhstan» in collaboration with UNDP Kazakhstan.

The main purpose of the workshop is to increase the capacity of public authorities, ministries and committees, as well as local authorities to understand the implementation issues of RES strategy and development. Participants will also discuss some training issues concerning human capacity development with representatives of the leading universities and the ministries of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The project is being implemented in collaboration with public agencies of Kazakhstan. The government of Kazakhstan is interested to learn the practices of neighboring countries in the sphere of renewable energy and to discuss capacity building issues with foreign experts for more effective implementation of RES in Kazakhstan. In particular, Kazakhstan specialists have an interest in studying the experience of Russia, China and the International Centre for Sustainable Energy Development under the auspices of UNESCO located in Moscow.

The UNESCO Cluster Office in Almaty will prepare several recommendations for the development of new regional training programs to include a broad range of stakeholders and prepare such courses using new learning technologies for Central Asia region. For this purpose, at the end of November 2010 UNESCO in cooperation with the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) will organize a Regional Expert meeting that will provide an opportunity put together leading UNESCO and ISESCO experts as well as university teachers from the Central Asian region. UNESCO plans to form a team of national experts to develop an online course on Renewable Energy for decision makers, and to strengthen the capacity of university teachers from the Central Asian countries in some relevant disciplines.
